The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) works with community-based organisations in Africa addressing the intersection of sexual violence and HIV & AIDS. SLF understands that sexual assault has long been recognized as one of the primary causes of the high levels of HIV infection among women and girls. These organisations deal with crisis situations, providing urgent medical care, counselling and expert assistance on the ground.

Women Against Rape (WAR), Botswana
WAR employs around 20 people who work to support women and children who are experiencing abuse in their lives. This includes working directly with survivors and their dependants as well as their family members, including perpetrators.

Services offered include psychosocial counselling, accompanying to medical services, police investigations, social workers assessments for social security services, preparation and attendance at court where applicable. The counsellors at the office and at the safe house also offer trauma counselling and reconstructive therapy.
